Gardena High School - Shooting 2011

Two high school students were injured when a 9 mm Baretta handgun, brought to school by a student "for protection," accidentally fired when the backpack it was in was dropped on the ground or was bumped, according to recent news reports. One female student was shot in the head and is in "grave" condition. Another student was shot in the neck. Both were purportedly hit by the same bullet. (Trending News - January 18, 2011)

Gardena High School, known as GHS, is a public high school in Harbor Gateway, Los Angeles, California, United States, adjacent to the City of Gardena. It serves grades 9 through 12 and is a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. There have been several school shootings at GHS within the last few years. The latest occurring on January 18, 2011.

Gardena High School History

Gardena High School (GHS) opened in 1907. In Spring 1956, the junior high school classes stayed at the old Gardena High School while the high school classes moved into a new building. Up until the opening of the new Gardena High School, high school students held morning shifts, while junior high school students held afternoon shifts.[3] The junior high is now known as Peary Middle School, or junior high.

2011 Gardena High School Shooting Details

On January 18, 2011, two students were wounded when a gun brought to the school by a student discharged; some sources indicated it was an accidental shooting when the backpack containing the firearm was dropped on the ground, with a single bullet wounding both victims. According to Patrick Gannon, Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Police Chief, one of the wounded students, a 15-year-old girl, was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. The other wounded student, a 15-year-old boy, was in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the neck. A suspect has been caught and has been handcufffed.[6] The situation ended when the shooter, who had barricaded himself in a classroom with hostages, surrendered to police.

Gaston Green: NFL running back, 1988-1992, attended UCLA, played for the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Broncos. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 1991 as a Bronco.
