Population of the United States Hits 300 Million

America's about to hit the 300 million mark any day now. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the resident population of the United States, is: 299,811,596 (almost 300 million). This is the estimated population on 09/23/2006 at 20:29 GMT (EST+5). There's a net gain in U.S. population of 8,640 ever day, or more than 260,000 every month.

In the month of Septemeber, 2006, component setting estimates are:

  • One birth every - 7 seconds

  • One death every - 13 seconds

  • One international migrant (net) every - 30 seconds

  • Net gain of one person every 10 seconds

The population of the United Staes reached 100 million in 1915, and 200 million in 1967, and is expected to hit 420 million by the year 2050.

A significant change in the population will be the number of people over the age of 65. 24 years from now, in 2030, the number of people 65 and older is expected to make up 20% of the total population. In 2000 that figure was only 12%.

Is the 3 million mark something that the U.S. is celebrating? According to most people interviewed, nobody has a clue.

"If we're supposed to celebrate this thing, then let's get it going!" said Tom Scott, of San Francisco, California. He raised a glass in advance, just in case the festivities don't get off the ground.
