Quit Smoking: Drink Nicotine Beer
The German company, BeverageMarketing/Nautilus GmbH recently announced the launch of NicoShot, a beer with a couple of cigarettes worth of nicotine in it. The beverage contains 3 milligrams of naturally derived nicotine alkaloids, and is considered a nicotine replacement product like nicorette gum.
According to the company, "for most smokers, three cans of NicoShot is comparable to an entire pack of conventional cigarettes." Whoa!
"NicoShot is a smoking-cessation brew designed to satisfy the nicotine urge whenever you want a cigarette, but can't smoke -- providing a realistic way to quit smoking," says Richard H. Davis, President of Beverage Marketing USA, Inc., "NicoShot is a nicotine enhanced beer that can significantly control cigarette cravings, yet it taste like a fine imported European beer." Nice.
UPDATE (10/4/05): ABC News reports that Australia has already banned adding nicotine to food and beverages.
Lydia Buchtmann from Food Standards Australia New Zealand says that, while the substance had not been specifically banned previously, they've "done a safety assessment and ensured that nicotine can't be added to food or beverages."
